What’s wrong with drinking bath water, anyway?

Kids. I don’t have any. I don’t want any.

But don’t say I don’t love them. I absolutely love them.

I’ve spent the past few days babysitting for my nieces (ages 3 and 1) while Kevin and Jenn are on vacation in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico), and I have learned a few things about kids:

= a sippy cup is not the same thing as a bottle (no wonder Sadie wasn’t wanting her milk!)

= Missing a nap has the opposite effect one would think – instead of being extra tired at night, they are extra cranky and sleep-deprived (Jenny told me this for fact; I learned it first-hand when Mia went to a birthday party during naptime.)

= Help is so, so valuable. Colleen spent the weekend here with me. Jeff brought me dinner at night. Amy visited with her girls and they kept Mia company. My parents visited and the girls looked forward to that all day.

= Nothing beats PBS.

= The bouncy seat with toys all around it is a perfect distraction while I’m doing the dishes or cleaning the counters.

= The whole “why” game is completely annoying. Mom, I apologize. I’ve learned it’s very difficult to explain, in 3-year-old language, why it’s not ok to play with one’s, um, privates, in public or why it’s not ok to drink bath water after taking a bath in it or why coffee is for grownups.

= Games are great for kids that won’t eat. We played the “guess how many raisins I hid in your peanut butter sandwich by tasting game” and the “if you eat four bites then you can sing your sister a song” game. It worked!

= Nothing beats hearing, “I love you, Missa. Can you stay forever?” As challenging as this has been, I’d do it again in a heartbeat …

No idle hands at this house

This weekend, in pictures and thoughts: The run: I didn’t take pictures of everything, of course. I didn’t photograph me waking up at 4:30 a.m. just to get my run in because I knew I had a busy day ahead. I was home before the sun came up, so it would have been a picture [...]

Me vs. pickup: So glad it didn’t happen

My dog woke me up at 5 a.m. to go to the bathroom, which seems terrible but the silver lining was that my alarm was going to go off 40 minutes later (yes, 40 minutes is 40 minutes, but still) for my morning run. As I was already up before the moon even decided to [...]

On blue hair and beer helmets

I’ve run in 5 races now (3 this year) and one could say they all start to run together except – they don’t. At least not yet, not for me. I remember each step of each one, who I was with, where the difficult hills were, who was cheering me on at the end. This [...]

My birthday party video: The next best thing to being there?

I have virtually no experience in video editing, but Susan brought her Flip to my birthday party so of course we had to have fun with it at the bar. And of course I had to spend all day playing with it in Windows Movie Maker. Apologies in advance for bad lighting, bad camera skills [...]

I heart my nieces

Wanted to take a minute to show off my beautiful nieces and some of my design work at the same time … I designed these birth announcements for my sister-in-law and my brother for their baby girl, born in early September. Isn’t she beautiful? If you want more, I wrote about them here not too [...]

Being an aunt

I arrived in NYC on Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon, my sister-in-law, Jenn, gave birth to their second daughter, Sadie Claire. As much as I have loved spending the week in my favorite visiting spot, something is missing. I need to see my nieces! (and my dogs, for the record.) Years ago I decided I didn’t [...]
