The next best thing

I won’t be running in this year’s Thunder Road Marathon. I’d tentatively planned on running it, depending on how Marine Corps Marathon went, and truthfully I do think I could get to the finish line just fine. But I weighed the financial cost of signing up with my readiness level – and truthfully, I don’t think I’d be running my very best race.

Instead, I’ll be volunteering at the start line. The coolest part is that Kevin will be volunteering also. I was actually inspired by a post Kevin wrote a while ago about volunteering, and I was stoked to hear he wanted to do it too. (Bonus points for Kevin: Saturday is his wedding anniversary. He gets double props for volunteering!)

I’ve got close to a dozen running friends who are participating in either the full or the half or the 5K. Truthfully, I’ve been a little down in the dumps this week, hearing everyone talking about preparing for Saturday and knowing I wouldn’t be running. But after signing up to volunteer, I instantly felt a million times better. I can’t wait to see everyone at the start and finish!

Go you! The fact that you’re staying in the realm of endurance events is what matters. You don’t have to run every race, just don’t get to a point where you forget you want to.

I am looking forward to volunteering too! I felt so much better after I signed up too. Must be something about the commitment that makes us feel good. See you all on Saturday!
