and she rolled her eyes.

Yes, I suppose it is.”
“Then I’ll be back,” he promised.
Mmmm, I like this one a lot. Kudos on the excellent use of temporal imprecision to set up the ending. This is the kind of piece I can read over and over again and still get the same little jolt I got the first time I read it.
